An Oklahoma abortion law that would’ve imposed new restrictions and regulations on the state’s abortion facilities was ruled unconstitutional Tuesday by its supreme court. Senate Bill 642, according to the court, violated the state’s requirement that each piece of legislation only have one subject. The law was shot down by the “single-subject” rule, which is meant to prevent “veto-proof” legislation that might be overloaded with items so that it must be signed in order to prevent more serious consequences. Opponents said the measure provided guidance to various state agencies for more than one purpose, including consent for a minor seeking an abortion and directions for the state department of health. The various provisions were reportedly disconnected enough that some lawmakers felt trapped in voting on the bill. Gov. Mary Fallon signed the bill into law in 2015.
