Oregon Football Player Held in Killing

Beau Smith, a football player and senior at Oregon’s Willamette University, has been arrested and charged with murder in the death of 66-year-old Michael Hampshire of Salem, Oregon, police said. Smith, 22, was detained Wednesday night after Hampshire’s body was found near school and government offices in Salem earlier in the day. Smith, a California native, reportedly flagged down a patrol officer a few blocks from the crime scene, covered in blood and with hands raised, and said, “I need help. I was in a fight.” A Willamette official said the school is cooperating fully with the investigation.
