Overworking employees in the name of efficiency is never a good thing. Take the case of USIS, the security firm that vetted both Edward Snowden and Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis. No evidence has emerged that the company cut corners during the background checks of the two men, but former employees report that, due to tight deadlines and heavy caseloads, they did not feel able to do their job as well as they wanted to. With up to 10 cases due in a day, employees drove from one interview to another, wondering whether they had gone deep enough before moving on to the next case.
