Freeing prisoners to foster peace? That’s what Pakistan did, releasing Afghan Taliban captives who may be “useful” in talks. The move is seen as a gesture that Islamabad is on board for Afghan peace. It’s widely thought that before 2014, when NATO troops pull out, an agreement with the Afghan government and insurgents would be ideal. It’s unclear which top Taliban members have been freed.
