Pakistani Taliban Has New Leader

After former Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud (pictured) was killed in a U.S. drone strike, the group’s top council met on Saturday in the tribal area of North Waziristan (where drones are still flying overhead) to choose a new chief. Khan Sayed, a veteran insurgent and chief of the South Waziristan area, was voted in. Sayed was previously the group's number two commander and is thought to have masterminded an attack on a jail in northwest Pakistan in 2012 that freed nearly 400 prisoners. He is also thought to have been behind an attack on a Pakistani air force base.
