Palace Malice Wins Belmont

So much for a Triple Crown—or even two out of three. Palace Malice won the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, dividing up the Triple Crown among three different winners. Jockey Gary Stevens, aboard Preakness winner Oxbow, was just about nose-to-nose with Palace Malice—but Stevens knew he couldn’t keep going at the same pace. He glanced over at his friend, fellow Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, and said, “You go on with the big boy, you’re moving better than me.” Palace Malice, the three-year-old son of two-time Horse of the Year Curlin, wasn’t a favorite to win Belmont—he only had one prior win in seven starts. Oxbow finished second, while Derby winner Orb finished third.
