A Navy parachutist was killed Sunday when his parachute failed to open during a demonstration for Fleet Week at Jersey City’s Liberty State Park. The parachutist’s name has not been released, but authorities said he was a Navy SEAL commando performing an aerial maneuver for the Leap Frogs, the U.S. Navy Parachute Team. Thousands of spectators watched from the park as he plunged into the Hudson River. He was pulled out by the Coast Guard but later pronounced dead at Jersey City Medical Center. Authorities have said only that his chute “malfunctioned,” with no further explanation given.
