House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) canceled plans for a re-election fundraiser for Rep. Lee Zeldin after the New York Republican voted against the tax bill that passed through the House earlier this month. The move was meant to punish Zeldin, The New York Times reported, who was also outspoken about the bill’s elimination of the federal deduction for state and local taxes. The lunch event still occurred Wednesday, but the money raised reportedly went to Ryan’s campaign and the National Republican Congressional Committee, rather than to Zeldin.
