Top Democratic leaders on Tuesday unwittingly used a fake tweet to attack former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Elijah Cummings cited an unapologetic tweet from an account pretending to be Flynn. “Just this morning, Flynn tweeted, and this is a quote: ‘Scapegoat.’ End of quote. Scapegoat. He basically describes himself as a scapegoat,” Cummings said. Other reporters pointed out that Pelosi also went after Flynn for the “scapegoat” tweet. Flynn resigned on Monday night amid questions over his contact with Russian government officials and allegations that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about what was discussed during those conversations. Parody Twitter accounts have been among the many ways in which so-called “fake news” has duped otherwise-reputable sources like major news outlets and lawmakers of all stripes.
