Perry Backer: Mormonism is a Cult

It wasn't all anti-Obama speeches at the Values Voters Summit Friday. Texas evangelical leader Robert Jeffress introduced Texas Gov. Rick Perry as a “a genuine follower of Jesus Christ,” and then explained his word choice by telling reporters that Mitt Romney “is not a Christian.” Perry's campaign immediately tried to distance itself from Jeffress, saying that it “does not believe Mormonism is a cult” and that Jeffress had been chosen by the event's organizers. But Perry's camp acknowledges that it approved Jefrress, who is the pastor at an influential Baptist church in Dallas. Jeffress, surprised by the response to his comments, said, “This isn’t news. This idea that Mormonism is a theological cult is not news either.” Romney's campaign declined to comment.
