Charlie Hustle returned to managing baseball Monday night for the first time since he was banned for life in 1989. Pete Rose managed Connecticut’s Bridgeport Bluefish, which belongs to the independent Atlantic League, which is why it was permissible under the ban. Major League Baseball handed down the punishment after Rose admitted to betting on baseball, including on teams he was managing. Rose made his debut after a 25-year absence at a 5,300-person stadium, a stark contrast to his days playing for and managing the Cincinnati Reds. Rose, 73, earned 4,256 hits during his career, the most in Major League history, but hasn’t been voted into the Hall of Fame. Rose said he wants to show that he still loves the game and can serve as representative. “If I’m ever reinstated, I won’t need a third chance,” he said. “Believe me.”
