In a haze of tear gas, an Egyptian protest turned deadly at dawn on Monday. An estimated 51 supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood were killed and hundreds more injured when army and police units opened fire on a sit-in for the deposed president Mohamed Morsi outside the elite Republican Guards headquarters. The military blamed a “terrorist group,” and said the officers were defending the base from attack, while the Muslim Brotherhood spokesman claimed the protest was peaceful and demonstrators had their heads bowed in prayer when army and police factions began shooting.
