The “Grand Salon” of the New York apartment of Australian publishing heiress Lady Fairfax, for sale at $35 million in 1996, is the centerpiece of the 12,000-square-foot space that occupies the top three floors of The Pierre hotel. The extravagant room features 23-foot ceilings, an 18-foot-high fireplace, and a Victorian bird cage with five cockatiels.
