Poland has overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for an absolute ban on abortion in the country in a 352-58 vote. The measure would have banned abortion even in the case of rape and resulted in prison terms as a consequence for violating the law. A citizens’ initiative had gathered about 450,000 signatures proposing the bill, and a majority of legislators voted two weeks ago to consider it. But the proposed law sparked a massive street protest Monday that drew international attention, and on Thursday it failed.
