Pope Francis on Sunday canonized three indigenous child martyrs from the 16th century, deeming them the first Christians in the New World who were killed for their faith. The indigenous children were Talaxcaltec, from an area in modern-day Mexico. They were among 35 Roman Catholic saints who were canonized on Sunday during a ceremony in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. The pontiff also announced that he intended to meet with bishops from Pan-Amazon countries in October 2019 to discuss indigenous populations there.
