In his first visit as pontiff to South Korea, Pope Francis told South Koreans on Thursday that peace will require forgiveness, cooperation, and respect as North Korea fired off five projectiles. He also discouraged “mutual recriminations, fruitless criticisms, and displays of force.” It was also the first English speech of his tenure. Upon landing in South Korea, Francis shook hands with four relatives of the victims of the recent ferry sinking that killed more than 300, as well as two descendants of the 124 Korean Christian martyrs he plans to beatify.
