Pope Francis made a surprise appearance outside the Vatican ambassador's residence in Quito, Ecuador, on Sunday, asking a crowd of supporters to join him in praying a "Hail Mary." The pope urged the crowd to "let the neighborhood sleep" after people outside had been shouting, "Come out, pope!" The pontiff arrived in capital to kick off an eight-day tour of Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay in his first visit to Spanish-speaking Latin America. The Argentine-born Francis will not make a stop in his native country, opting to only visit three of the continent's smallest and poorest countries. The pope is expected to lead a large open-air Mass on Monday in Ecuador's largest city of Guayaquil.
