The White House said Tuesday that it will not allow oil drilling in the Atlantic Ocean. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said the administration’s next five-year offshore drilling plan “protects the Atlantic for future generations.” The announcement reverses a proposal the administration made last year, which would have opened up sites more than 50 miles off the coast of Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia to oil drilling within six years. Local opposition and other conflicts caused Interior to change its mind since the January 2015 plan was announced, Jewell said.
