Reverend Daniel J. Berrigan, the Jesuit priest who became famous for his role in protesting the Vietnam War passed away on Saturday at the age of 94. Berrigan was seen as one of the most influential in the Catholic “new left” which focused on issues of poverty, rase, war, and unchecked capitalism. The even Berrigan would forever be associated with was the trial of the Catonsville Nine. Bergen, his brother, and seven others publicly burned Selective Service draft records to protest the Vietnam War. This would not be the last time Berrigan was arrested, as he would run up against the law time and again.
