Indiana Republican leaders are planning to announce a proposal to amend the state’s “religious freedom” law to protect LGBT customers, employees, and tenants, the Indianapolis Star reports. The measure is aimed at quelling the national backlash and protests over the law, which currently allows persons who feel their religious freedom is “substantially burdened” to fight an order in court. The new language is expected to specify that the law cannot be used to discriminate against customers based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and extends protections in housing and employment. At a press conference Thursday morning, Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma added that “discussion [over non-discrimination protections for LGBT people] has begun, whether Hoosiers want to have it or not.”
