John Dehlin, a Mormon who has openly criticized the Church of latter Day Saints for its anti-gay marriage position, has been told he will be excommunicated unless he shuts up. Dehlin says he was told by a church official that if he does not take down his Mormon Stories website and podcasts and disavow his support for same-sex marriage and female ordination of bishops, he will be barred. “I would prefer for them to leave me alone, but if given the choice between denying my conscience and facing excommunication, I’d much rather be excommunicated,” said Dehlin. Kate Kelly, a friend of Dehlin who is a female ordination activist, was excommunicated in 2014.
