Prosecutors are arguing against a bid by John Hinckley Jr.’s lawyer to grant him more freedom. Hinckley has been in a mental ward for nearly 30 years after being found guilty of insanity for his 1981 attempt to assassinate then-president Ronald Reagan. In a hearing on Wednesday, prosecutors said Hinckley was spotted browsing books on his former target and other presidential assassins this summer. They also quoted a 1987 diary entry saying doctors “will never know the true John Hinckley.” But his lawyer claimed he’s “not dangerous” and should be allowed to visit his mother more often and eventually be released from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Washington. He added that Hinckley is treated with an antipsychotic medication and hasn’t acted out since he was admitted to St. Elizabeth’s.
