Los Angeles police urged about 300 demonstrators to remain calm as they threw eggs, rocks, and other items at police while protesting the shooting death of a Guatemalan immigrant Tuesday night. Police arrested 22 people, mostly for refusing to disperse and unlawful assembly, and tear gas was fired into the crowd. The chaos followed a press conference in which it was revealed that a police officer shot Manuel Jamines twice just 40 seconds after officers made contact with him. On the night of the incident, a cyclist told police that a man was threatening people with a knife. Officers told Jamines in English and Spanish to put the weapon down, but instead Jamines raised it above his head and lunged at Officer Frank Hernandez. More than a dozen witnesses say Hernandez’s fatal shooting of Jamines was “in immediate defense of life.”
