Russian President Vladimir Putin became the first world leader to congratulate Donald Trump on his victory in the presidential election. The Kremlin released a statement Wednesday morning saying Putin had sent Trump a note of congratulations and expressed a hope for “future cooperation in pulling Russia-U.S. relations out of the crisis stage.” He also said he was counting on dialogue built on “equality” and “mutual respect” between Moscow and Washington, and that the two nations could work together to solve pressing issues in the world. Earlier, Russian state media reported that the country’s parliament broke out into applause upon learning of Trump’s win. Those watching state-run news programs on Wednesday morning were also treated to re-enactments of the Republican nominee’s victory using Clinton and Trump impersonators.
