Ravi to Turn Himself In

Dharun Ravi, the former Rutgers student convicted of hate crimes in March after using a webcam to spy on his gay roommate, will turn himself in Thursday for a 30-day jail sentence. Ravi appeared in court Wednesday and said he is ready to begin serving his sentence, which could be lowered to 20 days with good behavior. Ravi apologized on Tuesday for “wrong choices,” but insisted his actions were not “motivated by hate, bigotry, prejudice, or desire to hurt, humiliate, or embarrass anyone.” Ravi was convicted of using a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, having a sexual encounter with a man. Clementi committed suicide shortly after the incident.
