Red Sky in London
Skies of London Turn Red As Bomber Command Honoured
The sky turned red in London yesterday, as the RAF’s last flying Lancaster bomber dropped thousands of bright red poppies over Green Park.
The air-drop came as survivors of RAF Bomber Command stood shoulder to shoulder for the unveiling of a long-overdue memorial to their fallen comrades.
Sixty-seven years after they last flew into Nazi skies on daring missions that helped turn the tide of World War II, the 55,573 young men who did not return were finally honoured for their sacrifice.
More than 5000 surviving airmen and their families travelled from across the world to join the Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla for the poignant dedication in Green Park, London to see the Queen unveil the centrepiece of the memorial – a 9ft bronze statue of a seven-man bomber crew.
