Report: NBC to Spin Off SNL ‘Weekend Update’

NBC is reportedly in talks to expand Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment into its own 30-minute prime-time weekly show, according to Politico. The new spinoff might run Thursday evenings, and comes as SNL—riding on a wave of impressions of President Trump, White House adviser Steve Bannon, and press secretary Sean Spicer—looks to capitalize on the new neverending news cycle Trump has helped cultivate since he announced his plan to run for office. Variety reports that the show has upped its viewership by 22 percent. NBC, however, neither confirmed nor denied Politico’s report.
