According to Russian state media, President Vladimir Putin has ordered a withdrawal of the “main part” of the country’s military forces in Syria, claiming they had accomplished their mission. According to BBC News, Putin informed officials at the Kremlin that the removal would begin Tuesday. Russia initially entered the Syrian civil war as assistance to its ally, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, against rebel forces and fighters for the self-declared Islamic State.
