Russia has reportedly deployed a cruise missile in secret, in violation of an international arms treaty. The New York Times, citing administration officials, reports that the missile is the same one that was tested in 2014 during the Obama administration, which admonished Russia for violating a 1987 treaty governing missile deployments. Russia has, according to the Times, “moved ahead with the system, deploying a fully operational unit.” The missile deployment comes as President Donald Trump seeks friendlier ties with Russia, which has been accused by U.S. intelligence agencies of waging an influence campaign during the 2016 presidential election to damage Hillary Clinton and promote Donald Trump’s candidacy.
