The ruling Libyan government reported Thursday that former dictator Muammar Gaddafi has been captured and possibly killed, although NATO and the State Department have not confirmed the reports. National Transitional Council officials said Gaddafi had been wounded in both legs, and Reuters is reporting that an NTC spokesman said Gaddafi died of his wounds. Sirte, Gaddafi’s hometown, had fallen to the former rebels shortly before his supposed capture. Reuters quoted a Libyan government official who said that Gaddafi was hiding in a hole and shouted, "Don't shoot, don't shoot," upon capture. Tripoli reportedly erupted in celebration upon hearing the reports, as people cheered, "God is great, God is great, Gaddafi has been captured." U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she could not confirm whether Gaddafi had been captured or killed, but said she would breathe a sigh of relief when the news is confirmed.
