Requests to Deport Immigrants Fall 30%

The Department of Homeland Security’s use of “detainers,” which are requests for undocumented immigrants to be deported, has fallen 30 percent in recent months, according to a new report. Detainer requests ask police to keep immigrants that Immigration and Customs Enforcement wants to deport in custody for up to 48 hours after their scheduled release. This decline represents a bigger change in immigration enforcement initiated by Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
