Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spicer compared his job defending Donald Trump to the jobs of doctors and criminal-defense attorneys who occasionally help “bad people.” The Republican Party has long been considered a staunch advocate of free trade, but with the nomination of Trump, a vocal populist and protectionist, there exists some cognitive dissonance. When asked to defend his role defending someone with policy proposals counter to the GOP’s own history, Spicer told The Washington Post on Wednesday that his main concern is winning. “There are doctors who help people who have done bad things, there are lawyers who defend bad people,” he explained. “I don’t think it’s unique to my profession.” He added: “If the charge against me is that I fight to win and I’m intense, then I’m guilty.”
