Rushdie Didn't Like First Cut of 'Midnight's Children'

Though he wasn't happy with an early version, he says the finished 'Midnight's Children' moved him to tears.

The film version of Midnight's Children, adapted from Salman Rushdie's screenplay of his own 1981 Booker Prize-winning novel, will open in New York theaters April 26. But Rushdie tells The Aesthete digital magazine that when the director Deepa Mehta and the editor Colin Monie showed him a near-finished version of the movie, he didn't like it. "It was very hard to put a finger on what wasn’t there. The funny stuff wasn’t funny. It was just not OK," Rushdie said. The two went back to work and adjusted the rhythm, Rushdie said, "and I thought, there’s the movie. It was an extraordinary moment. I said, 'You made my book into a movie.'"
