The film version of Midnight's Children, adapted from Salman Rushdie's screenplay of his own 1981 Booker Prize-winning novel, will open in New York theaters April 26. But Rushdie tells The Aesthete digital magazine that when the director Deepa Mehta and the editor Colin Monie showed him a near-finished version of the movie, he didn't like it. "It was very hard to put a finger on what wasn’t there. The funny stuff wasn’t funny. It was just not OK," Rushdie said. The two went back to work and adjusted the rhythm, Rushdie said, "and I thought, there’s the movie. It was an extraordinary moment. I said, 'You made my book into a movie.'"
