Russia is threatening a crackdown on American news organizations that operate in the country if the United States continues to put pressure on the Kremlin-funded TV network Russia Today (RT). “Everything that Russian journalists and the RT station are subject to on U.S. soil, after we qualified it as restriction of their activities, we can apply similar measures to American journalists, American media here, on Russian territory,” said foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. She declined to elaborate on which outlets could be targeted and in what ways. RT has been accused by U.S. officials of helping to perpetuate a Russian influence campaign as part of the Kremlin’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 election. Russia denies those allegations.
