A top official of the Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has proposed to ban “uncontrolled” sites like Skype, Gmail and Hotmail, after a week of cyber attacks on popular websites which bloggers believe to be linked to government agencies. Though President Dmitry Medvedev’s LiveJournal blogs was among the targeted sites, his advisor has publicly condemned limiting Internet freedom. But a spokesman for Prime Minister Vladimir Putin called the proposal “quite well-reasoned.” The FSB has said foreign e-mail and communication services like Gmail and Skype pose a threat to national security.
