Russian Oil Rig Sinks, 49 Missing

A floating oil rig that was being towed in a storm Sunday capsized in the Sea of Okhotsk off the coast of eastern Russia's Sakhalin Island. Officials say 67 people were on board: there are 14 survivors so far, four bodies were found, and 49 are still missing. The rig was not operating and had been towed by two ships. It's the second high-profile maritime disaster in Russia this year, after a pleasure boat sank in the Volga River in July, killing 122. Russia has been aggressively pushing ahead with offshore drilling in the Arctic Ocean and other areas prone to storms and iceberg disasters. The Sea of Okhotsk has a petroleum-rich shelf that is partially covered by ice floes in the winter.
