Salmonella infections resulting from bad eggs at an Iowa distributor have only begun, according to government officials' statements today. The outbreak, linked to egg shells, has already been faulted for about 2,000 infections. "With the fact that contaminated eggs could still be in consumers' refrigerators, this outbreak could really be one of the largest linked to eggs that we've seen in 20 years," said Caroline Smith DeWall of the Center for Science in the Public Interest. Meanwhile, researchers are investigating whether rodents could have infiltrated the feed troughs of chickens at the Iowa plant, causing the outbreak. The tainted eggs come in a variety of brands.
