San Francisco-Area Homes Sinking

Eight homes near San Francisco have been abandoned and 10 more are under notice after it appeared that the houses are sinking into the ground. “It’s a slow-motion disaster,” said Randall Fitzgerald, who lives in Lakeside Heights, the 30-house subdivision that is being threatened. The homes, which offer sweeping views of Clear Lake and Mt. Konocti volcano, are slowly sinking into the ground for unknown reasons. Unlike Florida sinkholes that can be deadly in an instant, the hilly volcanic region in California can move feet in one day and just inches the next. The state sent a water resources engineer to assess the situation, and repairs were made to the region’s public water system on Friday.
