A midnight strike by San Francisco’s Bay Area Rapid Transit workers has disrupted the commutes of over 400,000 riders, causing heavy traffic delays. This despite the fact that the strikes took place on a Friday, the lightest commute workday, signaling that much worse will come on Monday. This is the second time this year BART workers have gone on strike after contract negotiations went past their deadline without a deal. Both sides were close to an agreement on wages, health insurance and pensions, but could not agree on management’s demand for more control over work rules, scheduling, overtime pay and how paychecks get delivered.
