Authorities said Wednesday that a notorious member of a group that tried to escape San Quentin prison in 1971 was killed during a riot involving 70 inmates at the new Folsom prison. Hugo “Yogi” Pinell, a member of the notorious San Quentin Six, was killed when a fight broke out in a general-population yard. At least 11 other inmates at California State Prison, Sacramento, were taken to area hospitals. Pinell was originally sentenced to life with parole for rape in 1965, but received an additional life sentence for killing a guard in 1971. A few months later, his attempted escape from San Quentin left six people dead and he was convicted of assaulting two correction officers, earning him another life sentence. “He was definitely the target,” California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Dana Simas said.
