Sandra Bland’s family filed a lawsuit in federal court Tuesday against the Texas state trooper who arrested her after a traffic stop before she died of apparent suicide. The lawsuit also names the Walter County, Texas, Sheriff’s Office and two guards who worked at the jail where Bland was found dead. The suit accuses trooper Brian Encinia of assault and battery during the arrest and alleges that he violated her constitutional rights, which led to her death.
