The founder of a “Free Saudi Liberals” website will endure the first 50 lashes of a 1,000-lash sentence on Friday, according to Amnesty International. Raif Badawi was arrested in June 2012 and sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes after prosecutors deemed his earlier sentence—seven years in prison and 600 lashes—too lenient. Badawi’s remaining 950 lashes are reportedly being carried out over a 50-week period.
