The Supreme Court lifted the stay that prevented Kansas from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples on Wednesday. Same-sex marriage is effectively legal in the state, as a result. Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Daniel Crabtree struck down the state's ban as unconstitutional, putting the ruling on hold until November 11 at 5 p.m. local time. The state requested a stay on the order to end the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who oversees 10th Circuit requests, issued a stay on Monday until a further ruling. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court decided to deny the stay, clearing the way for same-sex marriages in Kansas. Justices Clarence Thomas and Atonin Scalia objected.
