Robert C. Byrd, the 92-year-old Democratic senator from West Virginia and the longest-serving senator in American history, has been hospitalized. According to a statement released by his office, "his doctors have described his condition as 'seriously ill.'" For the past three years, Byrd has been in and out of the hospital, but thus far his condition has never been described as so serious. Byrd checked in to the unnamed Washington area hospital last week for heat exhaustion. Two and a half years remain in Byrd's record ninth term in the Senate.
