While the overall unemployment rate is steadily dropping, there are still a shocking five million people in the ranks of the long-term unemployed. The Bureau of Labor Statistics show short-term unemployment numbers are on par with 2007, but there are 257 percent more long-term unemployed. Legislation in Washington has been proposed, but not passed, despite a growing pool of job applicants who describe themselves as "too young to retire, too old to get hired." To make things even worse, a new survey shows only 10 percent think the government should hire the long-term unemployed, while 34 percent believe nothing at all should be done.
