In a bipartisan resolution introduced Wednesday, several senators announced they have “a high level of confidence” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was “complicit” in the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi. In a press release, Sens. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Todd Young (R-IN), and Chris Coons (D-DE) said they introduced the resolution in order to hold Saudi Arabia accountable for its actions. “There is no doubt that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman knew about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, condoned it, and at worst was actually involved in directing it,” Rubio stated in the release. The resolution also states the crown prince was “in control of the security forces” at the time of Khashoggi’s killing, and calls for the U.S. and “international community” to take action against all parties who were “involved” in Khashoggi’s murder. The resolution pits lawmakers against President Trump, who has explicitly said he puts business interests with Saudi Arabia above Khashoggi's killing and downplayed Mohammed's alleged involvement. Khashoggi was killed in Istanbul’s Saudi Arabian consulate in early October, and the CIA reportedly concluded the crown prince ordered the killing.
