On Friday, Roberta Vinci defeated Serena Williams in the U.S. Open semifinals and ruined her chance to win tennis’s Grand Slam. Williams would have been the first player since 1988 to win the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. Open in the same season. However, Vinci won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 and will face fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta on Saturday. Williams has not lost the U.S. Open since 2011 and previously held a 33-match winning streak.
