Snowboarder Shaun White won a gold medal in the halfpipe, delivering in his third run and edging out his closest competitor, Japan’s Ayumo Hirano. White had been leading after Monday’s qualifying round. The nail-biting final had White leading after the first round, but Hirano took over the lead after White fell in the second. The third round’s dramatic ending pitted Australia’s Scotty James against his rival, White, but James faltered, as did Hirano, clearing the way for White’s 97.75 score. At 31, White was the oldest competitor. White had an accident in 2017 that led to 62 stitches on his face; he reached a settlement in a sexual harassment suit.
