An Italian container ship crashed into a control tower in Genoa late Tuesday night, causing the tower to collapse and killing at least five people. Three of those killed were trapped in an elevator that fell into the water as the building collapsed. The crash occurred at about 11 p.m. on Tuesday night, when a shift change was taking place and as many as 14 people were inside the tower. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, although an Italian newspaper quoted the ship’s captain as saying that two engines had failed and “we just lost control of the ship.”
