In 1963, Mary McCarthy published her classic novel The Group, following the lives and aspirations of a group of Vassar grads. In the past few months, two novels have come out updating McCarthy’s formula: Joanna Smith Rakoff’s A Fortunate Age, which came out in April, and Commencement by J.
